Hand-colored stipple engravings by Pierre-Joseph Redouté
Les Roses is Pierre-Joseph Redouté's masterpiece of botanical illustration, published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824 with text by Claude Antoine Thory. The 170 hand-colored stipple engravings depict the roses of Empress Josephine's garden at Malmaison and remain the most celebrated flower portraits ever produced.
The plates shown here are public domain reproductions digitized by Old Book Illustrations (from New York Public Library scans) and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
